Ditch coffee and full English breakfast to cure a hangover, scientists say

Ditching coffee and eggs and instead drinking coconut water mixed with pear and lime juice could be the ultimate cure to a hangover, scientists have said.

According to a new study, the juice boosts two enzymes that break down alcohol in the body and helps relieve hangover symptoms.

The concoction is made even more effective when paired with some cheese, tomato and cucumber, according to the new study published in the journal Current Research in Food Science.

“A beverage made from a blend of sweet lime, pear, and coconut water could be used to overcome hangover,” the authors, from the Institute of Chemical Technology in Mumbai, wrote.

“The consumption of this beverage with cheese, cucumber, and tomatoes may further alleviate the hangover symptoms.”

The juice blend is made up of pear juice (65 per cent), sweet lime (25 per cent) and coconut water (10 per cent).

Those ingredients help bolster the enzymes alcohol dehydrogenase, found in the liver, by 23 per cent and the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase, found in the liver, kidneys and lungs, by 70 per cent.

Alcohol is converted to acetaldehyde when it enters the body and those two enzymes help to break it down.

The juice as well as wheat-based cereals and some spices like ginger, were found particularly efficient at alleviating hangover symptoms like headaches and nausea.

The study also suggests avoiding coffee, milk, oats, eggs and spices including pepper, nutmeg and cinnamon, which decrease the activity of aldehyde dehydrogenase “by a large magnitude” potentially resulting in a prolonged hangover.
