Disturbing new 'Blue Baby ritual' trend on TikTok explained as users left horrified

A horrifying new trend on TikTok is terrifying users after multiple 'Baby Blue ritual' posts went viral. The hashtag '#babyblue' now has a whopping 187.8M views on the video sharing platform, with thousands taking part in the 'ritual'.

The trend is being compared to the 'Bloody Mary' trend, which has been a staple of peoples' childhoods for decades. It involves individuals chanting "Bloody Mary" several times in front of a candlelit mirror, which is rumoured to summon a spirit - though this is just a made up game.

While 'Baby Blue' is similar, there are some sinister differences. TikTokers claim to have really experienced something supernatural in their videos while doing the ritual. But some others argue it just makes for good viewing content for the social media platform - which most engaged demographic is between 10 and 19 year olds.

What is the 'Blue Baby ritual' on TikTok?

While the trend may be fun for some, it is not to be taken seriously. However, it can be triggering for others - especially for anyone who has experienced something ghostly or has potentially lost a baby, so be careful before reading any further.

Blue Baby is an urban legend about a game played in bathrooms, which sees a ghostly figure allegedly appear in a mirror. To 'play' the game, go into a bathroom by yourself, turn off the lights then stand in front of a mirror.

While staring at your reflection, you proceed to position your arms as if rocking a baby while chanting the words: "Baby Blue, Blue Baby", 13 times without a mistake. If done 'right', you may feel the weight of an invisible infant in your arms that then is said to get heavier and heavier.

But before the 'baby' gets too heavy and starts 'scratching your arms', you have to flush it down the toilet and leave. If this isn't done quick enough, a woman appears in the mirror and shouts: "Give me back my baby" and 'breaks the mirror' with her screams.

If you're still holding the 'baby', believers of the 'ritual' say the woman in the mirror will become violent towards you. However, it's worth noting there is no actual footage of this happening, nor has anyone been hurt or killed as the result of the supposed ghostly figure.

In one post showing a TikToker not carrying out the ritual 'correctly', many viewers rushed to the comment section to urge him to complete it properly.
