Brazilians are up in arms after a viral video revealed a São Paulo state police officer casually throwing a delivery driver over a bridge into sewage water, according to a report.
A passerby recorded the footage of a police officer with his hand on the victim's shoulder, leading him to the side of a bridge in an impoverished neighborhood, according to The Guardian. The officer then picks up the man and throws him over the overpass while two other law enforcement officers watched.
The victim, who was later identified as a motorcycle delivery driver, per The Guardian, fell 10 feet into the sewage water but was rescued and taken to a nearby hospital by locals.
The trooper was arrested on Thursday and 12 other law enforcement officers who were involved were suspended.
Brazilians were outraged by the footage, which is evidence of law enforcements' worsening brutality against civilians. Brazilian law enforcement kills more than 6,000 people annually, according to Human Rights Watch, and African Brazilians are three times more likely to be a victim.
