Distressing dashcam footage caught moment drink driver smashed into back of car

Distressing footage captured on a Nextbase dash cam shows the moment a driver who later failed a breath test crashed into the back of a vehicle after attempting a high-speed overtake. The driver can be seen swerving into the back of the car after narrowly avoiding a red Mini in the opposite lane.

It appears to have attempted an overtake of the vehicle it crashed into but catastrophically misjudged how much room it had. The driver of the car in front was left screaming after the crash, which was caught with a rear-view Nextbase dash cam by the vehicle which was crashed into.

Police were called to the scene. The driver of the white car behind failed an alcohol test.

The driver of the recording vehicle, Neil, who wished to keep his last name out of the news to remain anonymous, said the incident left his family traumatised and with whiplash and back injuries.

"We were just travelling down the road at 23mph - then a guy decided that he was going to speed up and hit the back of us," Neil said.

"I think he was going to overtake the red mini but he ran out of road. There is no day when a driver like that should be on the road."

Neil got out of the car to obtain the other driver's details and assess the damage, whereupon they noticed the driver's eyes were dilated. The police were called and the driver failed a breath test.

"I'm a lorry driver so I'm pretty good about the road but my wife was completely traumatised by it. The two girls in the back had lower back injuries."

The driver behind was sentenced to a 22 month driving suspension.
