A couple has been caught living in a cemetery crypt for at least nine months by a woman who went to visit her father's final resting place.
The tomb squatters were found living inside the small mausoleum by local resident only known by her first name Karla who insisted that they leave.
The pair refused to get out and ended up putting a padlock on the gated entrance of the crypt in a cemetery on the Mexican island of Cozumel, just south of holiday resort, Cancun.
Outraged by the “disrespectful” couple’s refusal to move out, Karla took several photos to report them to cemetery workers.
She then returned with a caretaker who broke the padlock and removed the couple’s belongings.
Karla questioned how the couple could live there for so long without anyone noticing.
“Where were the authorities or those who provide services and security there?”
Karla added: “I went to visit my father’s grave and came across a huge surprise.
“There was a lady living for nine months in the mausoleum where the remains of our family are interred.
“The lady was literally living there because she had an electric grill which she used to cook with her partner, a man she nicknamed ‘Monkey’.
“It really infuriated me because it is a sacred place and no one should ever break into it.
“I asked her to get her stuff out, and the woman was so brazen she put a padlock on the gate so we couldn’t remove them.
“In the end, we broke the lock with the help of a worker.”
Karla said: “It’s incredible that these people used the crypt as a hotel. They even had their bike inside the mausoleum.”
She added: “Unbelievable, but true.”
