Disneyland Bringing Back Classic Rides Fans Love

Closings of Disney theme park rides and attractions are often temporary disruptions for refurbishment purposes.

On rare occasions, a ride might close and be replaced with a completely different attraction or sometimes a ride is reimagined or rethemed.

Splash Mountain at Disney World's Magic Kingdom in Florida permanently closed on Jan. 23 and is set to be rethemed as Tiana's Bayou Adventure when it reopens in 2024. Splash Mountain at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., is still operating but is set to permanently close on May 31 for retheming to Tiana's Bayou Adventure with a reopening planned in late 2024.

Tarzan's Treehouse in Adventureland closed in September 2021 for refurbishment. It remains covered from public view, but no reopening date has been revealed.

The Matterhorn Bobsleds, which is the world' first tubular steel coaster and was also Disneyland's first rollercoaster-style ride when it opened June 14, 1959, has been closed since April 17 for refurbishment but will reopen June 1.

The Alice in Wonderland ride in Fantasyland, which opened almost 65 years ago on June 14, 1958, is one of Disneyland's most popular rides that is unique as it doesn't exist at any other Disney park. The ride was updated in 1984, replacing painted cut-outs with three dimensional characters. It was refurbished again in 2014 adding new lighting and special effects.

Disneyland Rides Temporarily Closed

Guests at Disneyland might be a little disappointed for a few days as Alice in Wonderland will close once again on June 5 for refurbishment with plans to reopen on June 15.

Peter Pan's Flight and Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, which were original Disneyland rides featured on opening day June 17, 1955, have been renovated over the years as well. While the Peter Pan ride is featured at five Disney theme parks around the world, Mr. Toad is currently unique to Disneyland, though it once was a ride at Disney World's Magic Kingdom from opening day 1971 until 1998.

Mr. Toad's Wild Ride's original façade at Disneyland was updated to include stately Toad Hall during the New Fantasyland redesign in 1983 and various scenes and settings inside the ride were also enhanced with new details and special effects. Peter Pan's Flight was also updated in 1983 to include features from a similar ride at Disney World's Magic Kingdom in Florida.

Both Peter Pan's Flight and Mr. Toad's Wild Ride will close again for refurbishments on June 5, according to the Disneyland website. Similar to the Alice in Wonderland ride, the Mr. Toad ride will reopen for guests on June 15.

No Reopening Date for Peter Pan Flight

Unfortunately, the extremely popular Peter Pan ride, which draws long lines of riders, has not scheduled a reopening date, according to the Peter Pan's Flight page on the Disneyland website. The page suggests checking back for updates.

Next door at Disney California Adventure Park, Little Mermaid - Ariel's Undersea Adventure is the only ride closing in June at that park. Little Mermaid will close June 5 for refurbishment and reopen on June 8, according to the California Adventure calendar.

Guests should check the Hours & Events Calendar on the Disneyland Resort website to see if their favorite attractions are operating.
