Disney To Film Freaky Friday Sequel With Original Stars Returning

Disney is gearing up for a new installment in the beloved Freaky Friday franchise. Nisha Ganatra, known for her work on Hulu's Welcome to Chippendales, has been chosen to direct the sequel to the 2003 family comedy. The project is gaining momentum and is scheduled to begin filming in Los Angeles this summer.

The original stars of Freaky Friday, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Lindsay Lohan, are currently in talks to reprise their roles as the mother-daughter duo who swap bodies and lives. Both actors have expressed interest in a sequel for years, with recent discussions finally moving the project forward. Curtis even shared a photo with Lohan on Instagram, hinting at their potential return.

The upcoming sequel will be produced by Andrew Gunn, who worked on the 2003 film, alongside former Disney executive Kristin Burr. It remains uncertain whether the movie will have a theatrical release or debut on Disney+.

The Freaky Friday franchise, based on Mary Rogers' 1972 book, has seen multiple adaptations over the years, including a Broadway production. The original 1976 film starred Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster in the lead roles, exploring the concept of experiencing life from another person's perspective.

While Lohan has transitioned from her teen years, the new script by Jordan Weiss aims to take a multi-generational approach to the story. Curtis, fresh off an Oscar win for Everything Everywhere All at Once and the success of the recent Halloween trilogy reboot, is set to bring her star power to the project.

Lohan, currently enjoying a career resurgence with popular Netflix romantic comedies like Irish Wish, is poised for a comeback. Ganatra, known for her light touch in both series and feature films, brings a wealth of experience to the director's chair, having worked on projects ranging from And Just Like That... to Late Night and The High Note.
