Disney+ introduces price hike and ad option as it knocks Netflix off top of charts in streaming wars

Disney+ has surpassed Netflix to become world's most popular streaming service. However, the good news ends there as they've introduced an option for advertising and a price hike to go with it.

At the end of the most recent quarter, Disney announced that the service now has 221 million subscribers.

Shows like The Simpsons, Family Guy and Dopesick have been backed up with Disney and Pixar's extensive movie library to give viewers the option for whatever kind of show they're in the mood for.

Combined with Hulu and sports offering ESPN+, Disney had 221.1 million streaming subscribers at the end of the June quarter. By comparison Netflix said it had 220.7 million streaming subscribers, having lost more than a million last month alone.

Disney+ with ads will cost $7.99 a month, the same price the company now charges for the ad-free version.

The cost of Disney+ without ads will increase by $3 a month to $10.99 as of 8 December. Prices for Hulu, also owned by Disney, will rise by $1 to $2 a month depending on the plan.

The price increase does not appear to affect the UK and Ireland as of yet, but Disney previously revealed that the ad-supported membership tier would also launch internationally in 2023.

Currently, Disney+ costs €8.99 a month or an annual price of €89.90 in Ireland.
