Disney Cruise Ship with Thousands on Board Forced to Stay at Sea as Hurricane Helene Barrels Towards Florida

NEW YORK - FEBRUARY 28: In this handout image provided by Disney Parks, DISNEY CRUISE LINE MAKES INAUGURAL VISIT TO NEW YORK: the Disney Fantasy, the newest ship of Disney Cruise Line ship, sails past the Statue of Liberty after traveling nearly 3,800 miles across the Atlantic Ocean from Bremerhaven, Germany. The 4,000-passenger Disney Fantasy will be christened in New York on March 1, then sail to her home port of Port Canaveral, Florida. Hurricane Helene continued to wreak havoc as it forced a Disney Cruise Line ship with 4,000 souls on board to remain at sea.

The ocean liner "Disney Fantasy" failed to make it to its destination in the Cayman Islands from a port in Cozumel, Mexico, due to the dangerous oncoming storm. CruiseMapper showed the ship stuck offshore for an extra day, according to The Street.

The Port Authority of the Cayman Islands announced the port's closure because of "inclement weather caused by Potential Tropical Cyclone 9," which has since become known as Hurricane Helene.

The ship ended up skipping Grand Cayman altogether, taking its thousands of passengers straight to their next destination: Falmouth, Jamaica.

"Fantasy" is scheduled to reach its final stop at Port Canaveral in Florida this Saturday, September 28. However, forecasts indicate that storm conditions may significantly worsen there by the weekend, with Hurricane Helene expected to reach a potentially devastating Category 4 intensity.

This storm is raising significant alarm across the south, as it is projected to be more powerful than any other storm the nation has seen so far this season.

In Florida, a state of emergency was declared by Governor Ron DeSantis as Hurricane Helene swiftly approaches the state, threatening high tides and torrential rains.
