Disney has confirmed the upcoming Indiana Jones movie will be the last in the series.
Hollywood legend Harrison Ford has starred as the heroic archaeologist for more than 40 years.
But it’s now been established that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will be the final film of the series as the iconic actor enters his eighth decade.
It’s long been thought that the movie would be 80-year-old’s last playing the much-loved character, given his age and his irreplaceability.
Disney has now drawn an official line in the sand, confirming the franchise has reached its end.
Its makers have labelled the film the “highly anticipated final instalment of the beloved franchise” ahead of its release in June.
While the news will come as a sad update for many fans, the franchise will be going out with a bang.
Ford defied his years with an action-packed performance when the first trailer for the film dropped in December.
Ford returned as the icon professor for the film which features Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge as his trusty companion Helena, who is his goddaughter.
The final instalment of the popular series sees Indiana Jones seemingly come out of retirement in his quieter life as a professor in education before he is somehow coaxed into his latest escapade.
The first sneak peek of the film, which is set to hit the cinemas on June 30, 2023, also used some impressive technology of de-aging Ford during a flashback scene.
The trailer starts with a man trying to convince Indiana Jones to return to his life of adventure as the screen shows several past memories of the famed professor.
"I miss the desert, I miss the sea, and I miss waking up every morning wondering what new adventure the day will bring to us," the man says to the professor outside of an airport.
Indiana ruled out his approach, saying: "Those days have come and gone." But the man perseveres, replying: "Perhaps. Perhaps not."
However, he is convinced to put on his iconic fedora once more.
"I don't believe in magic but there are few times in my life, I have seen things," Indiana says in a voiceover during scenes of the chaos about to ensue in the film.
"Things I can't explain. And I have come to believe it's not so much what you believe, it's how hard you believe it."
One of the scenes sees the professor on horseback as he gallops through a patriotic parade and on a subway track despite heading towards an oncoming train.
Jones shows off his athletic ability despite his advancing years as he jumps out of one Tuk Tuk and into another during a chase scene, while also Helena helps topple a boulder for her godfather.
Other adventures saw Indy on top of a moving train, fighting scenes and explosions in the frenetic trailer.
The advanced technology flashes back to a younger Indiana Jones after he is taken captive in a past scene, de-aging Ford considerably and realistically.
It finishes with Indy threatening a room of people by brandishing his famous whip, exclaiming "get back" before every person turns on the veteran with their guns and firing as he jumps to the floor in almost comedic fashion.
