'Disgusting' cost of Asda butter means only Morrisons more expensive for these essentials

The 'disgusting' cost of butter at Asda means that only Morrisons is more expensive for these shopping essentials.

Amid the cost of living crisis, we've been keeping track of the prices of the same eight essentials at all the main supermarkets since March.

During that time we've seen the bill for our shopping - a two-pint bottle of milk, a loaf of bread, coffee, teabags, butter, beans, chicken breasts and mince - yo-yo in price.

Earlier this month the cost reached a new high, with the bill at each one - Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons, Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's - topping £11 for the first time.

Last week Lidl's came back down - to £10.92 - after it made three price drops, including bringing its butter back down from £2.15 to £1.99 block, a move which helped it regain its position as the cheapest supermarket over Aldi.

Now there's only one supermarket where the butter is still costing more than £2, and that's Asda.

The price has sparked comments from shoppers, with one calling it 'madness' and another saying it's 'disgusting charging so much'.

The cost means that Asda's overall bill of £11.38, makes it the second most expensive of all, behind Morrisons' £11.55.

There has been only one price change this week, with Lidl reducing its bread from 39p to 36p, another product that seems to be yo-yoing in price each week.

Asda, which used to sell butter the cheapest under the old Smart Price range, has been approached for a comment.
