Did you know that real sangria can only come from Spain and Portugal? As the drink originates on the Iberian Peninsula, EU regulations state that only sangria produced in those countries can be labeled and sold as such.
So of course anyone visiting Barcelona from abroad should absolutely take the chance to try the real thing.
Many restaurants in Barcelona and elsewhere in Catalonia will have pitchers of sangria on the menu, and it’s difficult to truly go wrong. But with so many options, where is best?
1. Bubó Bar
If you look at any list of recommendations for sangria bars online, Bubó Born Barcelona is certain to appear, and for good reason. While primarily a pâtisserie and chocolatier (and a wonderful visit in itself if you’ve got a sweet tooth), those seeking the best sangria in Barcelona should head right next door to their tapas bar and order a glass. Bubó makes their sangria to order, by the glass, so the experience is almost more like having a delicious cocktail.

2. Arcano
For gourmets seeking a full dining experience in the heart of the city, you cannot do better than Restaurante Arcano. While more expensive than some other restaurants and bars on this list, the price tag comes with an atmospheric interior and artistic dishes, along with of course an absolutely delicious sangria.
3. Los Caracoles
Los Caracoles has been operating for over 180 years and is as authentic as you can get. The restaurant is traditionally decorated and in addition to its sangria, specializes in seafood dishes such as snails, clams, and shrimp. And if you’re also looking for a good place to try a real paella, Los Caracoles can check off both at once.

4. Bubita Sangria Bar
Bubita Sangria Bar is a vegan restaurant located in La Ribera neighborhood. For any vegetarians or vegans, Bubita is absolutely the place to go. In addition to their plant-based menu, they have a variety of fresh sangrias which can be bought either by the glass or by the pitcher, and which are each unique and use different wines, so there’s something for everyone.
5. El Tablao de Carmen
The Tablao de Carmen is a special find – a bar and restaurant where one can also watch a flamenco performance while eating. Located in Barcelona’s Poble Espanyol, the Tablao de Carmen offers tickets to evening flamenco shows that can be priced to include drinks, tapas, or a full dinner, depending on your budget. While tickets can be expensive, the performance is worthwhile, and both the drinks and tapas tickets include a litre of sangria.
