Easter comes not only with chocolate treats and traditions but also changes to the working week. One major discount supermarket has announced changes over the holiday that will impact shoppers across Nottinghamshire and the city.
High street retailer Lidl says that is is expecting a rise in customers over the bank holiday weekend - almost one million new shoppers headed for stores over Easter last year, it says - however, the firm has also announced that it will be closing completely on Easter Sunday.
The supermarket has stores across the city and county so if you are planning a shopping trip you'll need to take note of the altered opening times.
Lidl confirmed to Nottinghamshire Live that stores across England and Wales will be open as normal until 10pm on Good Friday and Saturday. Stores will be closed on Easter Sunday, opening again between 8am-8pm on the bank holiday Monday. Some store opening times may vary and customers are advised to check the store finder on Lidl’s website, for details on their local shop.

With reduced shopping time and potentially increased demand, Lidl is advising its customers about the optimum time to stock up on Easter essentials. Over the Easter period last year, data found that the quietest times to shop were between 8am and 10am, and from 6pm onwards. Meanwhile, Saturday was the busiest day for shopping, with stores seeing the highest levels of footfall between 10am-1pm, before starting to quieten down in the afternoon.
Sunday trading laws stipulate that shops in England and Wales larger than 280 square metres must close on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day. Under the Government rules, shops exempt from the Sunday trading restrictions for large shops include for following:
- airport and railway station outlets
- service station outlets
- registered pharmacies selling only medicinal products and medical and surgical appliances
- farms selling mainly their own produce
- outlets wholly or mainly selling motor or bicycle supplies and accessories
- suppliers of goods to aircraft or sea-going vessels on arrival at, or departure from, a port, harbour or airport
- exhibition stands selling goods
