'Disaster zone' beach left covered in cans of Stella Artois

New Brighton beach was declared a "disaster zone" after mounds of rubbish were left as people enjoyed the last hours of the heatwave yesterday evening.

On Wednesday photos emerged of New Brighton as people took to the beach to enjoy the final evening of this week's heatwave. The beach - strewn with dozens of discarded cans of Stella Artois, disposable cups, plastic bottles, disposable BBQs and cigarettes - was declared a "disaster zone" by one individual, who discovered the mess in the evening.

The man, who posted his gross discovery to Facebook, said: "Another disaster zone in New Brighton, however I managed to get it all up despite losing the light." He reported collecting as much as "80kg" of litter from a single night.

Some believed that the heatwave was not entirely to blame for the mass amounts of litter. Another man suggested, in response to the discovery, that the approaching Summer holidays - beginning on Thursday this week for many schools in the area - were also to blame.

He said: "You've had a busy few evenings. This heatwave has coincided with the start of the school summer holidays- the perfect storm. So the crowds have descended and brought their litter, as usual."

He called the amount of litter left on the beach last night, and on other nights, "overwhelming."
