'Disappointment' from shoppers as Waitrose in Wollaton to be replaced by budget supermarket

Concerns have been raised by local residents after a Waitrose confirmed its store in Wollaton would be replaced by a Lidl.

The upmarket store in Trowell Road has announced it will be closing in Autumn this year.

A local councillor has described the news as "very disappointing" with regular customers adding it would be "a real shame".

Reacting to the news, Councillor Cate Woodward, who represents Wollaton West for Labour, said her main concern was for the local people the store employs.

She said: "It's a big change and I must say it's very disappointing. I just don't understand why it's not been sustainable.

"My main concern is that I was informed there are 167 staff and I really hope they receive meaningful support."

Waitrose has said that it "will explore opportunities within the Partnership" for staff that want to stay in the company.

Councillor Woodward added that many of the staff were local people who had stayed on from when the store was a Co-op.

She added: "Local jobs are difficult to find and I felt that Waitrose were good employers and particularly pro-active in hiring older generations.

"The store has only been there four years but it always seemed popular.

"I am disappointed it's gone to Lidl because there's one not far away at Midland Way, near Ilkeston Road, and they are building one at the former Beechdale Baths site. But obviously that is a commercial decision."

The councillor also spoke of the impact to the local community.

"I think the Waitrose in Wollaton has been an important meeting place for residents with the cafe and we are losing a bit of the community feel," she said.

"The Post Office has also been there since the Co-op and had really good opening hours which is a big help for people in the area and we don't know what will happen to it.

"It's very accessible with a good bus service nearby so this will be a big change and will definitely impact residents".

A number of people living nearby said they used the shop but had not heard about the closure.

Speaking before the announcement of the closure had been confirmed, Gary Taylor, who has lived in Trowell Road for 20 years, said the store had been a convenient place to shop.

"It would be a real shame," he added.

"It can be a bit expensive but it's good quality stuff and it's just so convenient for us. It's quite a shock as it is always busy.

"There's also a Post Office in there and it would be difficult for people if that closed too."

Derek Davis, who is retired and has lived in Wollaton for 50 years, added: "It used to be a Co-op.

"There was a meeting that I heard about but I didn't know what it was about. We use it all the time."

A spokesman for Waitrose said: "We can confirm that we have exchanged contracts to sell our Waitrose & Partners shop in Wollaton to Lidl, which regrettably means we will close there this autumn.

"The 167 Partners working at the shop will now enter a period of consultation and as part of this we will explore opportunities within the Partnership for those who wish to remain with the business."

Waitrose & Partners head of shop trade, Chris Earnshaw added: “We have taken great pride in being part of the Wollaton community so the sale of the shop is not something we take lightly, but we have sadly not been able to find a way to make the shop commercially sustainable in the long term.

"Our priority is our Partners working there who will be fully supported throughout the process and we will identify opportunities for those wishing to remain with the business wherever possible."

A spokesman for Lidl added: "As part of our ongoing expansion programme we are pleased to confirm plans to open a new Lidl store in Wollaton.

"In addition to ensuring that a supermarket remains at the heart of the local community, the new stores will provide households with access to high quality affordable produce.

"We look forward to confirming further details in due course."

A spokeswoman for Post Office said: “We can confirm that Waitrose has given us notice they are leaving the premises in Nottingham which houses the Post Office.

"Customers should be assured that we are committed to maintaining service in the area and will work hard to deliver this.

"We will be working to identify a permanent solution to sustain Post Offices services and we will keep customers update with our progress.”
