A video of Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze's screen test for Dirty Dancing showed their "breathtaking" chemistry from the the first instances.
The first steps of the lead pair through some of the film's most celebrated dance moves have been shared on social media but there were doubts originally how they would hit it off.
Jennifer and Patrick had starred together in Red Dawn but there were rumours that they didn't see eye-to-eye during filming, so there was some apprehension that this might mean they couldn't work together on Dirty Dancing.
These fears were blown away when they got together to try out some of the moves which would make their name.
The story of the film is based in large part on screenwriter Eleanor Bergstein's in New York.
She would spend summers with her family in the Catskills where she participated in "Dirty Dancing" competitions.
At the time, she was also nicknamed 'Baby', which became the name of Jennifer's character in the hit film.
Eleanor first came up with the idea for the film in 1980, after a raunchy dance scene had been cut from the Michael Douglas film, It's My Turn, that she had written.
This prompted her to work on a screenplay based around that dance scene, which then took her back to her own dance competitions.
It took until 1986 before a film studio picked up on, after it was rejected by countless others.
Eleanor had teamed up with producer Linda Gottlieb by this point but they only got the movie into production after agreeing to slash their budget in half to $5million, at a time when the average movie was costing around $12million to make.
Emile Ardolino was chosen as the film's director, based upon his passion for the script which had read while on jury duty - he had never directed a film before this.
Emile was determined that they used dancers who could act, hence Patrick Swayze, as he disliked the 'stand-in' method that had been used in 1983 movie Flashdance.
While Jennifer Grey was his first choice, Emile had originally wanted Billy Zane for the other lead role but they proved to be 'clunky' together during screen tests.
It was then that he turned to Swayze for the part of Johnny despite declaring that he wouldn't dance again in a movie after a knee injury.
Jennifer initially had reservations after working with Patrick before but after their screen test, it showed they were the perfect match, with Eleanor describing their moves as "breathtaking".
