Director Adam Wingard has provided an exciting update on the long-awaited ThunderCats movie, hinting that it could be his next project. Wingard, along with his writing partner Simon Barrett, is actively working on the script for the adaptation of the popular 80s cartoon, making it one of their top priorities. The duo had to pause their work on the Thundercats project while Wingard was involved in another movie, but they have now resumed their efforts.
The live-action Thundercats movie has been in development for some time, with Wingard first announced as the director in 2021. Writer Simon Barrett has teased that audiences are not prepared for what Wingard has in store for the Thundercats adaptation, promising that it will be 'really, really cool' and will 'destroy.'
ThunderCats, which originally aired in 1985, follows a group of cat-like humanoid aliens known as the Thundercats who flee their dying planet and end up on Third Earth. The series has been a beloved childhood staple for many fans, who have long awaited a big screen adaptation featuring characters like Lion-O, Panthro, and Cheetara.
While fans eagerly anticipate the Thundercats movie, Wingard will first return to the MonsterVerse with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The sequel to 2021's Godzilla vs. Kong will see the almighty Kong and fearsome Godzilla facing a new threat that challenges their existence. The film will delve into the histories of these Titans, their origins, and the mysteries of Skull Island.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is set to be released internationally on March 27, 2024, and in the United States on March 29. Fans can look forward to Wingard's take on the Thundercats and the epic showdown between Godzilla and Kong in the upcoming MonsterVerse installment.
