Dipo Akinyemi says tour of English non-leagues schooled him for Scottish chance at Ayr United

Deadly Dipo Akinyemi says the school of hard knocks in England's non-leagues helped him prepare to light up Scotland.

The Ayr United striker has hit six goals in four games to hoist the Honest Men top of the Championship.

And the former Welling hitman believes a string of loan stints down south got him ready for his chance at Somerset.

He told the Ayrshire Post: "They made me into the player I am now. I had to go out and get experience.

"A lot of the games I've played have been in tough situations or on pitches that aren't great and you have to show hunger and desire.

"So compared to where I was last season, I'm just delighted to be here now.

"I'm grateful that Ayr have given me this platform to perform and fair play to the gaffer for believing in me."

Akinyemi's double helped unbeaten Ayr to a 3-1 win over Dundee on Friday night.

It kept up their red hot start to the season but the powerful striker insists nobody is getting carried away.

He said: "We're only five games in so we're not getting in over our heads.

"I back myself that whenever I'm in and around the box I will score goals.

"It might be me scoring them at the moment but the boys are working hard as a team to help that happen.

"If I keep performing like this week in, week out we have a fair chance to do well.

"I have a target that I've set myself but I'm keeping it to myself. But it's fair to say it's in double figures."

United head coach Lee Bullen added: "Dipo's been excellent since he came in and has taken brilliantly to Scottish football so far.

"It says a lot that opposition managers are coming out after every game and singing his praises.

"He's a real handful and I know I wouldn't like to get into an arm wrestling match with him.

"But a lot of credit must also go to the rest of the boys who are helping to get the best out of him."
