Diogo Jota makes injury admission as Liverpool forward remains sidelined

Liverpool star Diogo Jota has detailed how his time on the sidelines is going after suffering a 'serious calf muscle issue' in the 1-0 win over Manchester City last year.

The Portuguese attacker was left stricken late on against Pep Guardiola's side as Mohamed Salah's solo effort proved to be the difference on another memorable night at Anfield. As a result of the injury, Jota was ruled out of the World Cup.

Jota continues his rehabilitation and has offered an insight into what he is doing to keep him ticking over and fulfill his competitiveness.

The 26-year-old revealed to YouTuber AJ3 that he competed in the FIFA Global Series against professional players of the video game, winning two and losing three - which is no mean feat.

Fans will remember Jota going head-to-head and beating then-opponent Trent Alexander-Arnold during the Premier League FIFA tournament in 2020.

Detailing how the game has helped him during his recovery, he said: "[FIFA] It helps me a lot, especially now, I got injured last year so this was really helpful for me because it's my only way to compete.

"I love competitions so I just found something I could compete in whilst I was injured. That was this week in the FIFA Global Series. It's still football, a lot of the tactical side I like."

There is no exact timescale when Jota will return to first-team training and the matchday squad. During the enforced break due to the World Cup, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said: "Diogo will join us to continue his rehab. The conditions to train and recover in Dubai are just very, very good. A change of scenery is always a welcome factor when recovering from a long-term injury."
