Diogo Dalot drops hint on Aaron Wan-Bissaka future at Manchester United for January window

Diogo Dalot has claimed Aaron Wan-Bissaka gives him 'healthy competition' to start at right-back for Manchester United.

Wan-Bissaka was first choice right-back with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in charge at Old Trafford but he lost that status when the Norwegian was sacked last term. Ralf Rangnick promoted Dalot in the pecking order and the Portuguese international won that place on merit.

Ahead of Erik ten Hag taking over at Old Trafford, United informed Wan-Bissaka he was free to leave before the end of last season and it seemed like his days at the club were numbered until his recent performances in the absence of Dalot.

Dalot sustained an injury at the World Cup, which meant he was sidelined for the return of domestic action in December, and Wan-Bissaka performed well when starting in matches against Nottingham Forest, Wolves and Bournemouth.

It's now unlikely Wan-Bissaka will leave in the January transfer window and Dalot suggested he still has a role to play on Friday night.

"I feel very happy with the work I did during this recovery and I have to praise the medical department. They were fantastic with me and did a great job," Dalot told MUTV. "Also the manager, we all had a very good plan and fingers crossed everything will go well in the next few weeks, so collectively we did a good job and I was very happy with the game physically I was prepared to play.

''I think it’s massively important [squad depth]. That only shows that we are not just 11 players, we have to be a squad, and like I said many times, I learn a lot with Aaron [Wan-Bissaka], I’m sure he learns a lot with me as well.

''I think this is a good and healthy competition that we all have. I think in this squad we have at least two players for each position, a lot of players that can play other roles, so I think this dynamic makes us stronger, makes us better.

"I think we have good headaches to give to the manager and I think this is a good problem for him. We just have to give our best when we have the opportunities to play, not take that for granted because I think at this club, the demands are so high.

"The responsibility is so high that you have to be sharp every single game, and be ready mentally and physically. So I think we, as a squad, are going in the right direction.''
