Diogo Costa to Chelsea transfer latest: Jorge Mendes influence, release clause, Man United battle

Chelsea continue to be in the market for a new number one this season. The Blues have been linked with several shot-stoppers recently following Edouard Mendy's departure.

Kepa Arrizabalaga remains at the club, though Mauricio Pochettino's preference is thought to be recruiting a new goalkeeper ahead of the 2023/24 season.

Mike Maignan and Andre Onana have both been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, though FC Porto's Diogo Costa has now emerged a fresh candidate. The 23-year-old kept 16 clean sheets last season and has also attracted interest from Manchester United.

Erik ten Hag is also keen on Onana, leaving Chelsea battling with their Premier League rivals for a new number one. Here, football.london has rounded-up the latest news on Costa's future.

Chelsea leading the race

Chelsea are now thought to be in 'pole position' to land Costa this summer.

Jornal de Noticias have claimed the Blues have been 'accelerating sales' to raise funds and Pochettino's side are now 'better placed' to land the 23-year-old.

Release clause

A Bola have claimed that Costa has a €75million (£65m) release clause in his contract at Porto.

His deal in Portugal is due to expire in 2027.

Man United move

In June, Costa was quizzed on reports linking him with a move to Man United. As quoted by the Manchester Evening News, he said: "That’s the internet. It is a happiness and an honour to play for my favourite club. What they say is what they say, there is nothing concrete, I have a contract until 2027 and I hope to continue, let’s see."

Jorge Mendes 'connection'

Super Agent Jorge Mendes could initiate contact regarding a potential transfer between Chelsea and Costa.

Record claim the deal could cost Todd Boehly £64.2million.

On Pochettino's radar

Diogo Costa is on Chelsea's list to become Pochettino's number one, according to Portuguese outlet Record.

The report states that neither Porto nor the player's representatives have received a 'concrete proposal' from the west Londoners.
