Dining area is 'no longer fully weather tight' at Ayrshire hospital

Plans have been unveiled to spruce up the conservatory dining area at Ayr Hospital.

Ayrshire Live can reveal that NHS Ayrshire & Arran want to modernise the ageing structure and carry out an upgrade at the site.

The plans include the replacement of the existing glazed roof with an insulated light weight tile roof system and replace the aluminium windows and doors with upgraded features.

The conservatory dining area is located at the rear of the main hospital building and Fleming Muir Architects, based in Prestwick, are the agents behind the proposals.

The plans have been submitted to South Ayrshire Council and are listed as ‘pending consideration’ on their online planning portal.

In their planning design statement Fleming Muir Architects said the conservatory dining area, also known as Corton View Dining Area (Room 52A) is “no longer fully weather tight.”

Their statement goes on: “The proposals will replace the existing unsatisfactory structure with a new environmentally efficient one, providing a much needed facility for both staff and visitor use, extending the lifespan of the facility into the foreseeable future.

“The new structure replaces one at the end of its service life which is no longer fully weather tight and suffers, as most conservatory structures do, from extremes of temperature related to external weather conditions- often either too hot, or cold.

“The installation of an insulated roof will improve this considerably, the system of lightweight tiles will have a colour finish to match in with main roof finish.

“The new proposal will therefore be environmentally efficient and aesthetically respectful to the hospital. The existing facing brick base course will be left intact and re-used.”

University Hospital Ayr is the general hospital serving the South Ayrshire region and was opened in 1991.
