Digital theatre free to schools in the Liverpool City region

Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse has announced a new partnership to provide digital platforms for theatre fans and arts educators.

The agreement is to digitally capture and distribute at least one piece of new writing annually for Digital Theatre’s Education Platform. The first production of Our Town Needs A Nando's by Samantha O’Rourke, is available and free to access for schools in Liverpool City Region.

Mark Da Vanzo, CEO for the theatres told the ECHO: “It’s a real pleasure to finally announce this new relationship, now we’ve signed a multi-year ‘Heads of Terms’ agreement. We’re looking forward to collaborating with the DT+ team in the long term, creating exciting new shows that can bring real educational benefit to schools here and globally.”

The new partnership encompasses productions and sees the theatres co-create additional content and behind-the-scenes resources especially for the education market in the UK and internationally. The theatre has a long standing relationship with DT+ since the 2011 production of Macbeth (with David Morrissey) was captured and is still available on the platform.

CEO of DT+, Neelay Patel said: “This is a really exciting partnership for us. Working together on initial ideas, the theatres allowing us to join their artistic planning meetings is incredibly fruitful.

“This collaborative approach enables us to provide a much richer experience, and speaks to the unique value DT+ can offer educators and students globally, but also to theatres and companies”.

Peter Greggs, digital producer for the Everyman & Playhouse said: "Supporting schools with learning is a big part of what we do at the theatres and being able to realise this digitally allows us to extend our reach and grow engagement with the theatres and the city. A brilliant way for us to fulfil these ambitions”.

The theatres will be able to offer DT+ productions and bespoke resources to schools within Liverpool City Region for free. This will add to the free learning resources created alongside last year’s The Street Where We Live, which explored the role of the slave trade in the development of the city of Liverpool.

Our Town Needs A Nando's premiered at Liverpool Everyman in June 2022. Samantha, a graduate of the theatres’ award-winning programme, Young Everyman Playhouse (YEP) wrote the play during her time as YEP writer on attachment. A dark comedy set in a small seaside town brings a fresh perspective to the coming-of-age genre, dealing with sexuality, female friendship, threats to young women, class, relationships and the hearts and minds of teenagers.

In 2011, the company’s digital educational platform was launched and now provides students and educators in 98 countries access to invaluable on-line productions and supplementary educational resources to support the teaching of English Language Arts, Theatre Studies and Drama.
