Digger bursts into flames as fire crews tackle blaze at Edinburgh building site

Firefighters are tackling a large blaze in Edinburgh after a digger burst into flames at a city centre building site.

Emergency services rushed to the construction site at Viewforth in Fountainbridge on Wednesday afternoon after the piece of machinery caught fire, Edinburgh Live reports.

Located just behind the Union Canal footpath, the main body of the excavator could be seen completely engulfed in flames, sending smoke billowing through the area.

At roughly 3.40pm, fire engines arrived and were directed across the site towards the inferno, with two engines pulling up next to the digger.

In a video taken by a local resident, the crew can be seen blasting water at the vehicle with a large hose, with firefighters eventually able to extinguish the fire.

The cause of the blaze has yet to be determined.
