'Different' Leeds United backed for Brighton result but pundits can't agree

Leeds United will head into this weekend's clash against Brighton knowing they must get a result or potentially end up dropping into the relegation zone for the second time this season.

With the relegation battle heating up week-by-week, the Whites are walking dangerously close to the edge of the drop zone but a win over the Seagulls could propel them up to 15th if other results go their way.

Last weekend's defeat to Chelsea saw Wesley Fofana's header sink Leeds fans' hopes of doing the double over their historic rival for the first time since 1992 but they'll need to overcome another damning historical stat this weekend when they welcome Brighton who they've beaten just twice in their last 18 meetings.

With that being said, here's who the nation's pundits believe will take this weekend's clash between Leeds and Brighton...

Paul Merson

Writing in his column for SportsKeeda, Merson said: "It's a massive game for Leeds United. They're playing okay but they keep losing matches. Sometimes teams play poorly and get beaten. This Leeds team is playing alright but they're still getting beaten and that would worry me if I was their fan.

"Brighton are a very good team and they are playing really good football. Even when they got beaten by Fulham a few weeks ago, they dominated the game. I'd be shocked if Brighton don't get the win here against Leeds.

"Merson's Prediction: Leeds United 0-3 Brighton & Hove Albion."

Chris Sutton

In his column for BBC Sport, Sutton wrote: "Leeds are pretty similar to Everton in that really they need to win their home games to give themselves a chance of staying up, and also because they don't carry much of an attacking threat.

"In fact, Leeds have scored only one goal in their past five games in the league and FA Cup, which is why they are in so much trouble.

"They are absolutely desperate for a win here but their problem is that they are facing a Brighton side who are not fazed by anyone.

The Seagulls open teams up and play with a wonderful freedom - they have clicked so many times already this season that they actually have a good chance of making the top four. They don't seem to fear anyone.

"Leeds will have the backing of the Elland Road crowd, but they are going to have to show great intensity just to keep this one close.

"Sutton's prediction: Leeds United 1-2 Brighton."

Mark Lawrenson

Writing for Paddy Power, Lawrenson said: "Brighton are running amok at the moment, they had such a good result thumping West Ham 4-0. Leeds got beat by Chelsea and I think the only shot at goal was from the goalkeeper!

"That’s not a good stat. You just sense under Javi Gracia that they’re a little bit different now.

"Lawrenson's Prediction: Leeds United 1-1 Brighton."
