Diehard Edinburgh Hearts fan in stitches after discovery in middle of birthday cake

A diehard Hearts of Midlothian FC fan was left in stitches after cutting into a birthday cake for his 60th.

Stephen Watson, 60, was taken to the Royal Oak in Bonnyrigg on Sunday, January 15, for a surprise party, surrounded by friends, family and fellow veterans he had served with.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, his partner Katy Mcintyre, shared that the real surprise was found when he cut into the Hearts themed cake.

In the video shared, Stephen from Bonnyrigg shares his delight with the deep red cake, that proudly displayed the team's logo on the top. He blows out the candles as everyone sings happy birthday and cuts a slice out to enjoy.

However, as a slice is pulled out the colours are no longer red - but green and white - a nod to local rivals Hibernian FC. In disgust, Stephen announces that his friends can take the cake back and won't have anything to do with it.

There is quickly an uproar with laughter as Stephen's nearest and dearest cheer - even his partner shouts 'Come on the Hibbies!'.

Katy said: "He said he loved it until he cut it open, and then said we can take it back and he’s not eating that!"

But the sneaky cake certainly didn't put a dampener on the rest of the party. Stephen's surprise birthday bash was made even more special when his old Veteran buddies showed up.

Katy said: "He served with Malcolm Paton and Jenny Wren who are here tonight. He served with Malcom for at least 10 years. He was part of a lot of different “units” but one of them was Royal Scots.

"We had a piper playing for him coming in and we got Jimmy and The Small Laces on, he’s had a great night."
