Diego Simeone speculation could hand Man Utd chance to land 'next Sir Alex Ferguson'

Diego Simeone's future at Atletico Madrid is being questioned for the first time in over a decade.

The Argentine has led the Spanish side since 2010, helping them enjoy the most successful period in their history.

Last season Simeone led Atletico to the LaLiga title, having also done so in 2014, but this term they have been unable to mount a meaningful defence.

The capital outfit saw their season reach a new low this week as they were beaten by basement side Levante.

It leaves them 15 points off the top with a place in the top four by no means a guarantee.

Cadena SER reports that the club's hierarchy are eyeing alternatives to Simeone such is the extent of the situation at the Wanda Metropolitano.

If Atletico were to make a change then the Argentine coach would again be on the market.

He would not be short of offers such has been the impressive work he's performed in Madrid.

Manchester United are set to be on the lookout for a new manager this summer once Ralf Rangnick's interim spell has come to an end.

Simeone has enjoyed an authority at Atletico that is rarely seen in the modern game, such is the influence of sporting directors and other major figures.

The status 'El Cholo' is akin to that experienced by Sir Alex Ferguson during his lengthy tenure at Old Trafford.

The Scot, first appointed in the 1980s, utilised a level of control that allowed him to preside over a hugely successful era.

His retirement has seen United decline considerably but Atletico star Antoine Griezmann has previously likened Simeone to Ferguson.

"What 'Cholo' (Simeone) is doing for the club is historic," Griezmann said back in 2018.

"It's like what (Sir Alex) Ferguson did with Manchester United and hopefully he will win trophies and take the team to the top level because he deserves it.

"I hope he will make history with the club because, thanks to him, we are here.

"You learn a lot under (Simeone). I think he's the best tactical and defensive coach in the world and he shows that year in, year out.

"It's a joy to work with him. He identifies every player's weaknesses and tries to improve them, making you a more complete player."

Simeone has been able to break the Spanish duopoly enjoyed by Real Madrid and Barcelona.

He's also led Atletico to two Champions League finals, falling narrowly short in 2014 and 2016.

The Argentine's team have been drawn against United in the last 16 of the Champions League with the first-leg to be played next week.
