Mexican actor Diego Boneta initially sought to avoid talking about Issabela Camil's lawsuit against the producers of 'Luis Miguel, la serie' over the unauthorized use of her image. However, his apparent frustration have led him to claim that "political forces" were involved in the matter.
Both the lead actor and producer of the series, Boneta began an interview with Univision's 'Despierta América' by stating he didn't want to get involved. Yet he ultimately couldn't hold back.
"There are other interests at play," said Boneta, who also performed all of Luis Miguel's songs in the series. "Certain political forces are taking advantage in ways that are not always the most honest."
He urged the press to "investigate" what he sees as an attempt to suppress freedom of expression.
"What saddens me most is seeing how, in this country, people can manipulate situations with questionable intentions against something as important as freedom of expression," he concluded.
What happened with 'Luis Miguel, la serie?'
Boneta's remarks come as a response to a decision by Mexico's Attorney General's Office, which ordered Netflix to remove certain scenes featuring the character Erika, played by Camila Sodi. The character represents Issabela Camil, who had a seven-year romance with Luis Miguel.
Camil sued Netflix for violating her sexual privacy rights, arguing she never consented to her likeness being used. As a result, authorities gave Netflix five days to remove the controversial scenes.
The lawsuit is based on Mexico's "Ley Olimpia," which penalizes the non-consensual sharing of sexual content. The law also applies when a third party portrays an identifiable victim, as is the case with Erika's character.
Though Boneta didn't name names, his comments may allude to Sergio Mayer—an actor and former congressman for Morena, the political party of President Claudia Sheinbaum.
This isn't Camil's first legal action against the streaming giant. In 2023, she filed two civil lawsuits for moral and material damages, which remain unresolved.
