Didi Hamann remains unconvinced as Liverpool get back on track with Ajax win

Liverpool picked up their first win of the Champions League campaign as they beat Ajax 2-1 this evening, but Didi Hamann remains unconvinced.

It was another stop-start performance from the Reds, but Joel Matip's late header gave Jurgen Klopp's men a vital win.

A week on from a 4-1 mauling in Naples, Liverpool looked well short of confidence throughout and Daley Blind had a big chance to put the away side in front late on.

And while the English side turned in an improved performance and looked more like their old selves, Hamann agreed with Kenny Cunningham's assertion that tonight may only be a 'baby-step,' - albeit one in the right direction.

"I think it's early to say," said Hamann when asked whether tonight could be a turning point in Liverpool's season.

"Certainly a very important three points because, as we've seen in parts confidence was low."

"They had a few opportunities but didn't take them, but they've got to carry on the work that they started tonight."

While a tad underwhelmed, there were still elements of Liverpool's performance which the Champions League winner was pleased with, such as their control over the game. Additionally, Liverpool's danger from set-pieces pleased the RTE pundit.

"Certainly a step in the right direction, set pieces was probably what was different today," Hamann continued.

"Some brilliant corners from Alexander-Arnold and Tsimikas, they're all being put in the right spots."

"They had a few opportunities in the first half and took one late on."

"But yeah, as Kenny said, 'baby-steps, 'I'd probably go along with that."
