Dick Van Dyke, 97, could be forced to retake driving test after crashing car into gate

Dick Van Dyke is facing having to retake his driving test after losing control of his car and crashing in Malibu.

Police responded to reports of a single-car accident and found the 97-year-old actor behind the wheel of a 2018 Lexus LS 500 which he had crashed into a gate.

He told police he lost control of his car after sliding on the road following heavy rainfall in Los Angeles, before crashing into the gate.

According to sources, the Mary Poppins star was found bleeding from the nose and mouth and suffering from possible concussion.

Luckily, Dick managed to walk away with minor injuries.

However, police are said to have submitted paperwork to the Department of Motor Vehicles to request a driving retest for Dick following the accident.

A source told TMZ they cited his age as one of the reasons for the application.

Dick, who was treated by paramedics at the scene, is said to have been picked up by someone following the incident, so he didn't have to drive home from the scene.

This incident isn't the first time the actor has been involved in a car accident.

His latest crash comes 10 years after Dick was rescued from his Jaguar, which had been set ablaze, in Los Angeles.

A passer-by named Jason Pennington saved the day after spotting the car full of smoke on the side of the road.

At the time, Jason told TMZ he had seen an elderly man hunched over the wheel of the car. Luckily, Dick didn't require medical attention after the fire.

The actor's latest car accident happened just weeks after he was unmasked as Gnome on The Masked Singer.

The Hollywood legend blew the audience away as he belted out a powerful rendition of When You're Smiling by Frank Sinatra.

His show-stopping singing even reduced judge Nicole Scherzinger to tears as she she said it was "an honour" to watch him perform on the show.

Following his impressively energetic performance, Dick revealed the key to his youthful energy.

"Genes, I guess, for one thing," he said on the show, before adding: "Having a beautiful young wife half my age to take care of me - that works!

"My positive attitude, I get that from my wife."

Dick went on to note: "And one other thing is, I wrote a book called Keep Moving: I still go to the gym three days a week and work out.

"And I advise everybody to do that, because that's what ages people — it's just a stiffening up and not exercising their muscles and their lungs. Exercise is the answer."
