Dick Van Dyke, 97, behind the wheel in car smash and loses 'control of vehicle'

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang star Dick Van Dyke has been involved in a car smash in Malibu, it has been reported.

Last week, police responded to reports of a single-car accident and found the 97-year-old actor behind the wheel of a 2018 Lexus LS 500.

The vehicle had crashed into a gate and it is said that Dick lost control after sliding on the road following heavy rainfall in Los Angeles.

According to sources, the acting icon was bleeding from the nose and mouth following the accident.

Luckily, he only suffered minor injuries and was treated by paramedics at the scene and didn't need any further medical attention.

A source told TMZ that he possibly suffered from concussion following the smash.

They also told the publication that drugs and alcohol were not involved, but added that police have submitted paperwork to the Department of Motor Vehicles to request a driving retest for Dick.

It's believed that due to his age, they have called for the application.

It's said that Dick was then collected by someone following the incident, so he didn't have to drive home from the scene.

Dick's last public appearance when he was unmasked as Gnome on The Masked Singer.

The Mary Poppins star sang a powerful rendition of When You're Smiling by Frank Sinatra - blowing away the judges and audience.

Judge Nicole Scherzinger was even reduced to tears as she she said it was "an honour" to watch him perform on the show.

And after his performance, the 97-year-old revealed the key to his youthful energy.

He said: "Genes, I guess, for one thing," before adding: "Having a beautiful young wife half my age to take care of me - that works!

"My positive attitude, I get that from my wife."

He then said: "And one other thing is, I wrote a book called Keep Moving: I still go to the gym three days a week and work out.

"And I advise everybody to do that, because that's what ages people — it's just a stiffening up and not exercising their muscles and their lungs. Exercise is the answer."
