Diana Ross' Glastonbury set defended by fans after online criticism

Music fans have leapt to the defence of Diana Ross after the legendary singer was criticised online for her performance at Glastonbury.

Following in the footsteps of other icons like Kylie Minogue, Lionel Richie and Dolly Parton, ex Supremes star Diana filled the Legends slot on the Pyramid Stage on Sunday afternoon, after her recent Party at the Palace appearance and days before she performs at Durham Riverside ground in Chester-le-Street.

Diana, 78, kicked things off with I'm Coming Out, with her Glastonbury set also including Supremes classics like Baby Love, Stop in the Name of Love and You Can't Hurry Love as well as many of her solo anthems including Chain Reaction, I'm Still Waiting, Upside Down and Ain't No Mountain High Enough. Those watching Diana in action live on BBC could see the crowd lapping up her performance, although there was slightly awkward moment when she asked them to sing along to I'm Still Waiting and many of them didn't Know the words.

Having been accused of miming at the Queen's Jubilee concert, some viewers criticised Diana's live vocal, with one taking to Twitter to post: "Oh dear, Diana Ross is hitting a few bum notes isn’t she?" Another tweeted: "Diana Ross should have packed it in years ago. Her voice is long gone," and a third reacted: "Her voice not only gone as completely out of tune. Embarrassingly bad."

However, for all those who criticised Diana, plenty others spoke up in her favour, with one fan responding: "How anyone can hate on Diana Ross is beyond me. She’s 78 and the epitome of a LEGEND more than worthy of her slot at #Glastonbury," and another, defending her by writing: "The haters about Diana Ross at Glastonbury.... SHUT UP!! She had me in the palm of her hand at the O2 on Thursday night! She's a f**king LEGEND!! And she still belts out the f**king tunes!! And always will do!!! QUEEN!!!!!!"

Another commented: "For people/viewers that don't understand music. The voice does fade with age. A struggle to hit the high notes. It's remarkable Paul McCartney and Diana Ross are still performing."
