Left-hander Jordan Montgomery has officially signed a $25 million, one-year deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks, as confirmed on Friday. Montgomery, who previously pitched for Texas against Arizona in the World Series last year, is set to bolster the rotation of the defending National League champions. Expected to slot in as the No. 3 or No. 4 starter once he is game-ready, Montgomery will join Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, and Eduardo Rodríguez, who signed a $80 million, four-year contract with the Diamondbacks earlier in the offseason.
The newly inked contract includes a vesting option for the 2025 season. If Montgomery makes a minimum of 10 starts this season, the option will be guaranteed at $20 million, granting the left-hander the right to opt out as well. The option value would increase to $22.5 million with 18 starts and to $25 million with 23 starts, a milestone Montgomery has achieved in the past three consecutive seasons.
The agreement between Montgomery and the Diamondbacks was reached on Tuesday, pending the completion of a physical examination. Notably, due to Montgomery not being part of the organization on opening day, the Diamondbacks are unable to extend a qualifying offer to him as a free agent. Consequently, they would not be eligible to receive an additional pick in the 2025 amateur draft if Montgomery decides to depart from Arizona at the conclusion of the season and signs with another team.
