Diablo IV is Blizzard's highly popular action role-playing game that features various mercenaries who can accompany and help players on their journeys.

The game's Vessel of Hatred expansion allows you to hire these mercenaries that have their own ability tree and skills. They also have their own passive effects and specialize in either buffing certain stats or applying debuffs on your enemies.

Due to the variety of their effects, mercenaries serve as a sort of added bonus to players' runs through Sanctuary. Figuring out exactly which mercenary and what abilities they should have can have significant effects on your efficiency.

This guide aims to help players understand the basics of hiring mercenaries as well as how to unlock them and which ones are useful for you.

How To Unlock Mercenaries

The first thing you should know is how to actually unlock mercenaries so you can benefit from their bonuses and their assistance in battle. This feature can be accessed directly through the Vessel of Hatred main campaign, according to PCGamer.

After players arrive in Nahantu, Raheir will appear and take them to The Den, which is a special area where his old mercenary outfit used to gather.

After this is unlocked, you will recruit Raheir as your first mercenary. You will also be able to undertake quests from The Den to meet the other three; Subo, Aldkin, and Varyana.

How Do Mercenaries Work?

Generally, you can only have one primary mercenary in Diablo IV but you can also bring a Reinforcement mercenary. The latter will jump into action and perform one-off attacks when you call upon them.

You will gain Rapport as you travel the world together with your chosen mercenaries. This will grant you skill points to level them up.

You will also get Pale Marks currency. You can barter these with Fayira after the completion of the campaign in exchange for a variety of items.

Unlocking the Mercenaries

While Rahei is an automatic unlock along the Vessel of Hatred's main campaign, you have to work to get the remaining three. Aldkin can be unlocked by completing the A Nameless Mystery quest.

On the other hand, Varyana can be hired during the Slayer's Retribution quest and she acts as a martial warrior. Lastly is Subo, who can be unlocked by finishing the A Feather on the Scale quest, Polygon said.

Who is the Best Mercenary?

Raheir is arguably the best mercenary that players can hire to be their companion on their journeys. This is because of the benefits that he can provide and how he helps you in battle with the demonic creatures of Sanctuary.

This mercenary has an area-of-effect barrier ability that will reduce incoming damage for both himself and nearby players.

He also boosts armor and defensive buffs through Resiliency. In particular, Raheir is a solid choice for players who want to be aggressive but need a little bit more survivability, according to Windows Central.
