DGP warns of strict action against protesters who damaged public property in Kallakurichi over schoolgirl’s death

Tamil Nadu DGP C. Sylendra Babu on Sunday evening said the footage from CCTV cameras in the hostel block of the ECR International School in Kallakurichi, where a Class XII girl was found dead, on Wednesday last, was being examined.

The violence that broke out on the school campus would be investigated separately, he told journalists after inspecting the institution premises, along with Home Secretary K. Phanindra Reddy. Cases have been booked against 70 persons arrested so far, under various provisions including rioting and destruction of public property.

Mr. Reddy said the case was being probed from all angles, and appealed to people not to believe rumours and damage public property. Earlier at the Police Headquarters in Chennai, Mr. Babu warned of strict action against protesters damaging public property. He said the Kallakurichi SP and DSP have been investigating the death of the girl, and over 350 police personnel, under a DIG, were engaged in containing the protest over the incident.

The protesters threw stones at the personnel, burnt police vehicles, and damaged school property and vehicles. He alleged Alleging that damaging of vehicles and public property was a premeditated attack carried out by the protesters, Mr. Babu said an additional police force of 500 personnel, headed by ADGP Tamaraikannan, rushed to the spot.

At that time, he said, the case was being thoroughly investigated and the demand for arrest of teachers could not be met without any evidence of their involvement in the girl’s death.

A detailed report would be presented to the Madras High Court, where a petition relating to the girl’s death would be taken up on Monday.
