Dexter Lawrence: ‘I love the Giants’ and want to be here

New York Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, a first-round pick back in 2019, is entering his fourth year as a pro, meaning he is eligible for his fifth-year option.

The decision has to be made by the first week of May. But thus far, that decision has yet be made.

“There’s talk here and there. I’m controlling what I can control right now,” Lawrence said of the option, which will pay him $10.7 million in 2023.

“That’s going to handle itself. There’s nothing really, I can do about that right now. It’s up to whoever going to give me it or not.”

If it were up to him, Lawrence would prefer to stay.

“Yeah. I love the Giants. Of course,” he told the Giants beat pool on Wednesday. He is planning on convincing the Giants one way or the other as the defense’s centerpiece under new coordinator Wink Martindale.

“Definitely excited. Wink is a pressure guy, blitz guy,” Lawrence said. “A lot of pressures and blitz in install early. Learning that can be a little bit challenging. We all are asking each other questions. That’s the one thing, we’re not afraid to ask questions and learn.”

Lawrence is now seen as a veteran and the Giants will be leaning on him at least for one more year and hopefully beyond.

“I’m just becoming a better leader than I was before, speaking up more, keeping the energy up, coming in every morning with a smile on my face, positive vibes. That’s all I can really do right now, just try to be a leader and help everybody out,” he said. “That’s just something that I feel like is necessary for my role on the team.”
