Dew preparing for huge Qld AFL derby

Stuart Dew is confident his Suns can snap a seven-game losing streak against state rivals Brisbane. (AAP)

Gold Coast coach Stuart Dew is in no doubt Saturday's AFL match against Brisbane is the biggest clash between the two Queensland rivals in his time at the Suns.

Dew's team heads to the Gabba aiming to keep their slim finals hopes alive against a Lions team which is in a red-hot race for a top-four berth.

With such high stakes for either team, Dew knows there'll be added incentive beyond local bragging rights when the neighbours face each other.

"Certainly (the biggest) in my time given we want to win to stay in the hunt and they're chasing top-four, top-two, I'm sure," Dew said.

"There's a bit on this one.

"We just want to embrace that and look forward to Saturday night."

The Lions have won the past seven matches against the Suns and dominate the overall record between the two teams, with the Suns winning just six of 22 matches against Brisbane.

That record includes a 52-point loss earlier this season and last year's game at the Gabba where the Suns held a 27-point lead at halftime but were unable to prevent a rampant Lions storming to a 49-point win, the hosts kicking 13 goals to just one in the second half.

"I do," Dew stated simply when asked if he felt his players believe they can beat Brisbane.

"The way we went about the game earlier in the year shows that.

"We didn't wait, we tried to take the game on and we got punished on turnover but we were pretty keen to continue that forward movement and not wilt under pressure.

"We want to keep taking the game on."

Dew is also confident his team can rebound from last weekend's eight-goal loss to Essendon at Marvel Stadium.

Despite acknowledging the performance wasn't good enough against the Bombers, Dew says his team has already shown this year they can quickly respond to setbacks.

"It was our worst performance, no doubt. We broke down in a number of areas," Dew said.

"What we've done when challenged before, I think GWS was a game that springs to mind, but then we rebounded against Carlton.

"We just got back to our brand and what we want to play ... yes, we've we've looked at what we need to do better but I think at different times this year when we've been challenged, we've been able to respond.

"It's a big challenge to go up to the Gabba and respond against this footy club, but we need to and that's where we're putting our energy."
