Devoted US dad killed alongside mum and sister in horror smash on Brit road

A "devoted" dad has died alongside his mum and sister in a car crash in the Highlands.

Jared Bastion, 45, and his mum Mary-Lou Mauch, 75, were pronounced dead at the scene of the smash on the A9, near Newtonmore, Scotland, on August 10.

Jared's sister Kathryn Bastion-Strong, 46, was airlifted to hospital in critical condition but died a few days later.

The American tourists passed away after their vehicle was involved in a crash with a lorry, the Daily Record reports.

Their loved ones have been left devastated, saying they are struggling with the "profound, unquenchable loss."

Both Jared and Kathryn (known as Katie) were parents to three children and fundraisers have been set up to support their families. So far just under $70,000 has been raised in total.

Jared has been described as a "devoted father" to his three boys.

A family statement said: "He was a true friend to many with a kind, generous heart and gentle spirit. He also had a love for music, mushroom hunting, and fine cuisine.

"Jared had a lot more life to live and was taken from us far too soon.

"While all who loved him will feel this significant and profound loss, we hope that this will help ease some of the financial burdens so that his boys and their mother can focus on grieving and healing during this challenging time."

A friend of Katie's, Chris, and her aunt flew out to Scotland and arrived on the Friday morning after the crash. They were with her until she died at 3.30pm the next day.

Her three daughters are being looked after at home with a loved one and Chris has been staying in Scotland to arrange proceedings.

"She leaves a large imprint on this earth as a wife, a mother, friend, colleague, and neighbour," a fundraiser said.

"As her loved ones are struggling with angst, grief, and profound, unquenchable loss, we want to do whatever we can. This is one way to support them."

The lorry driver, a 59-year-old man, was unhurt in the smash that took place on August 10.

Sergeant Alasdair Mackay said: “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of those who have died at what is a very difficult time for all.”

The fundraiser for Jared can be found here and for Katie here.
