Incoming Trump administration official Devin Nunes has expressed his intention to act as a 'backstop' for President-elect Donald Trump in his efforts to 'depoliticize' the US intelligence community. Nunes, the former chair of the House Intelligence Committee, has been appointed as the chair of the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board by Trump. This board is designed to provide independent advice within the executive branch on the performance of the country’s intelligence community.
Nunes emphasized the importance of ensuring that intelligence products are not politicized during an interview on Fox News’ 'Sunday Morning Futures.' He highlighted his past efforts to challenge the FBI’s Russia investigation and Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe during Trump’s first term.
Stating his role as a 'backstop' for the president, Nunes mentioned that he would investigate any perceived issues and report them to Trump to swiftly address them. Trump and his supporters have consistently advocated for the depoliticization of the intelligence community and the justice system, often characterizing previous investigations against Trump as politically motivated.
Furthermore, there have been suggestions from Trump and his inner circle that he may utilize the Justice Department to target his political adversaries in a potential second term. The emphasis on depoliticizing intelligence and justice systems remains a focal point for the incoming administration.
