Devil May Cry is here – and the new Netflix show reunites us with our favorite wise-cracking demon hunter.
The series, based on the popular Capcom video game of the same name, follows Dante, an orphaned demon-hunter-for-hire, unaware that the fate of both the human and demon realms hangs around his neck. Castlevania's Adi Shankar serves as creator and showrunner, with Alex Larsen as head writer.
Here, you can find the lowdown on the cast, trailer, a summary of the plot, and much more, including whether or not the new Netflix show will stick around for a second season.

Devil May Cry season 1 review

Our two-and-a-half star review calls the new video game adaptation "mindless fun," and says that it "captures the anarchic spirit of the games." Overall, our reviewer wasn't too keen on it, writing that it's "bizarre just how dumbed down" the show is at points, in addition to being "dated and clunky."
Devil May Cry plot

As per Netflix, Devil May Cry's synopsis reads, "Sinister forces are at play at the portal between the human and demon realms. In the middle of it all is Dante, an orphaned demon hunter for hire, unaware that the fate of both worlds hangs around his neck."
Devil May Cry's Netflix series is based on the prequel manga of Devil May Cry 3, one which sees Dante on the hunt for a missing girl by the name of his Alice – and sees him come into contact with the White Rabbit. Along the way, he appears to encounter his long-thought-dead brother Vergil.
"What I wanted to do with this was three things. First of all, the original anime was very much like a monster of the week-style format, until you got to the last three episodes – then it was an arc," Shankar told GamesRadar+ ahead of the release of Devil May Cry season 1. "But this one, I wanted it to feel like a giant movie, like a Hollywood blockbuster from between 1999 and 2004. References being The Matrix, Underworld, Bad Boys, Equilibrium – I could go on, and on, and on. But I wanted it to feel like a Hollywood blockbuster, and, really, I wanted the audience to experience Devil May Cry in that mold."
Devil May Cry cast

In a slight surprise, game actor Reuben Langdon isn't the one who voices Dante in the Netflix series. Instead, Johnny Yong Bosch – who plays Nero in Devil May Cry 4 and Devil May Cry 5 – has taken as Dante for this project.

Devil May Cry trailer
The first Devil May Cry trailer was released in September 2024 during Netflix's Geeked Week. In it, the world is introduced to Dante, the swaggering, confident demon hunter who aims to put several ounces of lead into any demon that comes his way.
While the first teaser is more style over substance in terms of concrete story details, it does showcase Studio Mir's animation flourishes and the Netflix series' bloodlust for action.
Since dropping that promo, Netflix then unveiled a clip from the series, which you can watch above and sees Dante get into an alley fight with a trio of demons ("Hey, look! The Three Stooges came out to play"), and the show's pop punk opening credits.
Another trailer was released in March 2025. This one, which you can watch below, reveals that Vergil will be part of the story.
Does Devil May Cry fit into game canon?

Right now, it appears Devil May Cry's game series – that is, entries one through five in the mainline franchise – is completely separate from the Netflix series.
Instead, the anime is part of what creator Adi Shankar told IGN in 2018 is the 'Bootleg Multiverse' alongside Castlevania. Writing on Instagram, he describes this Devil May Cry universe as "set in a late '90s/early 2000s PS2 era of the world. It's not set in modern times. It's set in my memory of the world, pre- and post-9/11."
