Developer 'patiently waiting' to proceed with plans for Belfast night club's future

A developer has said they are "patiently waiting" to proceed with plans to turn a popular former night club into a new apartment block.

Plans were approved by the Belfast City Council Planning Committee in April 2020 to demolish the former Il Divino/ Plastik night club on Mays Meadows and replace it with 154 new apartments.

The nightclub has not been open for a number of years and the building itself is beginning to deteriorate with many of its windows having been broken.

The new development, proposed by the Benmore Group, will see the creation of a new residential development with 154 apartments with a ground floor retail unit. It would also include car parking and cycle storage, a reception and management suite area and new open spaces.

Kevin McKay, Chairman of the Benmore Group said: "We have had our plans for this new development approved a number of years ago and are now patiently waiting for the final documentation from the Council so that we can proceed with the creation of these new apartments."

A Belfast City Council spokesperson said: "Planning application LA04/2019/0517/F is a proposal for ‘Residential development comprising 154 units and ground floor retail unit, including reception and management suite area, internal and external communal space, open space and environmental improvements, car parking with access of Mays Meadow, bin storage, cycle parking, plant equipment and storage’ at the former El Divino Nightclub and car park and adjacent open space, Mays Meadow, Belfast.

"The application was approved at the Belfast City Council’s Planning Committee on 21 April 2020 subject to planning conditions and a Section 76 Planning Agreement to secure Green Travel Measures and the maintenance of the proposed open space. A draft Section 76 Planning Agreement has been received and planning permission will issue when the agreement is finalised."
