Devastating fire rips through Stockport house just yards from football stadium

A home was left burned out by an early hours fire, leaving the roof damaged and a window blown out. Emergency services were called to Mahood Street in Edgeley at around 5.48am this morning (July 31).

Firefighters and police descended on the street, there are understood to be no injuries and the fire was extinguished shortly after. Mahood Street was taped off the road for hours as investigations began - just a road away from the borough's football ground, which saw Stockport County's first game back in the Football League this week.

Police officers were speaking to neighbours of the affected house as firefighters continued to attend the scene. Work is underway to establish the cause of the fire, police have confirmed.

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “At 5.48am on Sunday 31 July 2022 three fire engines from Stockport, Whitehill and Cheadle fire stations attended a fire at a domestic property on Mahood Street, Stockport.

“Firefighters used four breathing apparatus, three hose reels and a high-pressure water lance to put out the fire and to stop it spreading to neighbouring properties. Crews remain in attendance at this time.”

Forensic officers and fire support crews were also in attendance, appearing to take evidence from the scene in white crime scene investigation suits.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "We were called shortly before 6am about this and have been assisting colleagues from GMFRS at the scene. Thankfully, no one is believed to be injured and the fire was extinguished earlier this morning.

“Work is being done with the fire service to establish the cause of the fire."
