Devastated mum wants you to know how 13-year-old son died to warn all parents

A devastated mum wants every parent to warn their children about the dangers of drugs after her 13-year-old son died of a suspected overdose.

Carson Price died at the start of the Easter school holidays after it is believed he took MDMA - Wales Online reports.

The teenager was found passing "in and out of consciousness" in a park and taken to University Hospital of Wales, in Cardiff.

Tragically the youngster died a short time later in hospital, on April 12.

Just a week earlier his mum and dad, Tatuma and Brian took a picture of their eldest son with a "cheeky grin".

And now, alongside this last memory of him, they are sharing the stark message to other parents about telling their children about the dangers of drugs.

Speaking to Wales Online at their home in Hengoed, Tatum said: "The last picture I took of him, with that cheeky grin, that’s how I wanted to remember him.

"It's an unimaginable experience to find out that your child is never coming home through taking drugs.

"I don't want any other parent or child to go through this."

Personal trainer Tatum said that devastating Friday evening had started out much like any other and that Carson had gone out to see his friends.

A passer-by had alerted the emergency services after seeing Carson stumbling and being sick in Ystrad Mynach Park with a group of friends that evening.

Tatum added: “It was my grandad’s birthday so I said to him (Carson) after school that we were going to see him.

"We spent an hour up there and were laughing coming back in the car with my mother and singing. Carson was always dancing in the car.

“Then he grabbed his bag and was out. He had to be in at half past eight on a weeknight and he was in every night on time.

"I never had to say where are you?”

But later that night Brian answered the door to police officers just hours after Carson had gone to see his friends.

Tatum said: “I was in the kitchen at the time. My husband wasn’t even contemplating that scenario in a million years and I still can’t get my head around it."

A police car took Tatum and Brian to the hospital, but Tatum said she started thinking the worst when they were not given an update on their son's condition.

The 39-year-old mum said she had even started praying police had got it wrong and that it was somebody else in the hospital.

However soon after arriving at the hospital the couple were given the earth shattering news that Carson had died.

They were then faced with the fact they had to go home to their youngest son nine-year-old Coby without his brother.

Tatum said: "I know it’s selfish but I prayed it was somebody else because you don’t want it to be your son do you?

“How do you explain that your brother is never coming home? I came in and he was crying. And I just said Carson has gone to sleep. What else do you say?”

In the two weeks since Carson's death, hundreds if not thousands of messages have poured in from other parents, friends, members of the community, and strangers from around the world.

The family’s front room has sympathy cards, flowers, gifts and photographs sat on almost every available surface - Wales Online reports.

The parents said they have spent the last 16 days trying to come to terms with the anger, guilt and pain they have felt since their son's death.

And they described their son as a popular and bright pupil at Lewis School Pengam, where he was placed in top sets and particularly excelled at music.

He had also taught himself to play the classical guitar by watching videos on YouTube.

Tatum and Brian said the circumstances of his death have been all the more shocking not only because he seemed too young to be taking drugs but because they are teetotal.

Tatum said: "We are normal parents. And for us that’s why it has hit home so much because it can happen to a normal family.

"I’m guilty of judging people like that and that’s society. But that’s the scary part.”

Tatum added: "There's always going to be naive children out there that are going to think 'I'll be OK if I take it' and we need to educate them that that's not going to happen.

"I know there's always going to be drugs out there but we need to stop these kids.

"We need to protect our little ones and we've got to get people talking and raising awareness about this because this is going on in our small communities.

"You feel you do everything to protect your children and Carson was a top set boy who had a future and prospects.

"You feel that they're never going to go down this path but it could be any child.

"As parents you are naive because you never want to believe your children would do anything bad because you do your best."

Tatum continued: "We accept the fact that Carson took them but obviously I know in a million years he would have never known if it was a bad drug.

"And if it wasn’t available, he would still be here, and that’s what makes you so angry.

"He was naive and wanted to enjoy himself but he never knew it was going to be a bad pill and it just shouldn't be available. We need to stop this. It's just so wrong."

Gwent Police have been investigating the involvement of drugs in Carson's death.

On April 18, the force said  a 14-year-old boy had been arrested on suspicion  of supplying Class A drugs in connection with his death.

He was bailed for 28 days while the investigation continues and officers liaise with the Crown Prosecution Service.

Police have released several statements saying Carson’s death is suspected to be linked to a form of MDMA branded with imagery related to the Donkey Kong video game franchise.

Tatum said: "For me now my life will never be the same. I've lost my first child, my son, through something so silly.

“I read the quote ‘every day I breathe, I’ll grieve’. I think that’s true for me now because I think I’m going to grieve every day until I’m in my grave."

Tatum and Brian are in the process of organising Carson's funeral which will be held on Tuesday, May 7.

The service will be followed by a gathering at Penallta Rugby Club on Caerphilly Road, Ystrad Mynach, which everyone is welcome to attend.

The couple said they will be "lighting up the sky" in a final farewell to Carson.
