Devastated mum raises concerns into investigation after son's death

A heartbroken mum has raised concerns regarding the ongoing investigation into her son's death and has called for more to be done to establish what happened to him.

Ryan Sims was found dead in the Green Road area of Co Armagh in April, 2022, with his family being told it is understood that he had drowned and his death was not suspicious.

Kerrie Mayne says she is not happy with the police investigation into her son's death and wants more to be done more to find out exactly what had happened to Ryan, including investigating photographs of injuries he had sustained prior to his death.

She also believes that more could be done to establish who was with Ryan in the hours prior to his death and has asked why nobody appears to have been questioned about this.

Kerrie says that she understands that Ryan had been seen in a red car in the area in the hours before he died and that he was in the company with another man.

The grieving mum also raised serious concerns regarding pictures of Ryan's dead body that circulated on social media in the hours after his passing and is asking why the person who took the photographs has not been tracked down and questioned, as they had access to his body before it was discovered by police.

Speaking to Belfast Live, Kerrie said: "I have serious concerns regarding the investigation into the death of my son Ryan and don't believe that enough has been done to establish the cause of my son's death.

"I believe that police were far too quick to draw the line under what happened by son, saying that his death was by drowning and non-suspicious, when I and others are worried that something else has happened to him.

"I have heard reports that Ryan had been with someone in the hours before his death along with him being seen in a red car in the area where he was found.

"Someone also managed to gain access to his body, prior to the police arriving, and they took very distressing pictures of him before putting them on social media. This person has not been identified and the police have not spoken to this person despite them having access to his body before the police.

"I am still waiting for answers about what happened to Ryan."

Detective Inspector Duffield said: "The Police Service has sincere sympathy with the family for the pain of their loss. We are continuing to meet and engage regularly to update family members on our investigation.

“The results of a postmortem examination and toxicology reports have been received and are being used as part of our enquiries.

“Our investigation to date has led us to treat this man’s sudden death as not suspicious and we will not be commenting further out of respect for the family during this time of an ongoing investigation.”
