Detroit Mercy will not play in the 2023 College Basketball Invitational, officially marking the end of Antoine Davis's quest to break Pete Maravich's NCAA all-time scoring record.
Maravich's record, which has stood for 53 years, was nearly shattered by Davis, but the Titans guard will ultimately end his career three points shy of the coveted mark of 3,667.
His last chance to break the record would have come via an invitation to the CBI tournament. Detroit Mercy finished the season with a 14–19 record, making them ineligible for a bid to the NIT and the NCAA tournament.
The team was defeated by Youngstown State in the Horizon League tournament's second round. Davis needed 26 points to break Maravich's record, but ended the night with 22, shooting 7-of-25 from the field.
Davis has been a starter at Detroit Mercy for five seasons. The fifth-year senior, who is coached by his father, Mike Davis, led the nation in scoring in 2022-23, averaging 28.2 points per game while attempting 22.2 field goals per contest.
Across 144 career games, Davis averaged 25.4 points, scoring 3,664 career points. Maravich, who averaged 44.2 points across a three-year stay at LSU, needed just 83 games to set his record.
With Davis's prolific career officially reaching its end, the Detroit Mercy star ends his college tenure an agonizing three points shy of the all-time scoring record, which figures to stand for a while longer.
