A mother faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder and felony murder, after allegedly killing her 9-year-old son and burying his body behind her Detroit rental home.

Brandee Katrice Pierce, 41, is accused of binding her son's hands and feet before killing him through neck compression and smothering in October 2024, according to Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy.

After the alleged murder, Pierce reportedly bought a shovel, dug a hole behind the garage of her rental home on Woodingham and buried the body of her son, Zemar King III. His remains were discovered on January 6, 2025, when workers noticed a foot protruding from the ground, FOX reported.

Pierce fled to Georgia with her other child shortly after the incident. Authorities in Georgia became aware of Pierce on December 20, 2024, during an investigation into an unrelated matter concerning her surviving child. This led to collaboration between the Cobb County Sheriff's Office and Detroit police, culminating in Pierce's arrest on January 10. She is currently awaiting extradition to Michigan.

"I have been a prosecutor for a long time, and I often say that I have seen it all," Worthy said. "The horrors of this child abuse case defy that. The alleged actions of this defendant are among the most callous I have seen and hope never to see again."

Pierce's surviving 3-year-old son has been placed in foster care.
