An investigation is under way into the death of a 17-year-old boy found on a major freeway in regional Victoria.

The Moe boy was found on the Princes Freeway at Moe in the state's east about 3.15am on Friday.

Police say it's unclear how he came to be on the road and officers are investigating whether he fell from a nearby overpass.

Detectives want to speak to a truck driver who may be able to assist.

The driver was seen in a vehicle with a blue or green shipping container.

A number of witnesses stopped at the scene and have spoken to Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives, who are trying to determine the cause of the incident.

Anyone with information or vision of a man walking near the road has been asked to contact police.
