Details released ahead of Alex Salmond's private family funeral

DETAILS of Alex Salmond's private family funeral have been released ahead of the service on Tuesday.

Salmond, who led Scotland from 2007 until resigning after the independence referendum in 2014, died suddenly on Saturday, October 12 after suffering a heart attack at an event in Ohrid, North Macedonia.

The family funeral of the former first minister will take place on Tuesday, October 29 in Strichen Parish Church at 1pm.

Reverend Ian McEwan, a friend of the Salmond family, will conduct the service before a private burial at Strichen cemetery.

Eulogies will be given by Salmond's friend and colleague Kenny MacAskill, who served in Salmond’s cabinet and defected with him to his new party in 2021, as well as SNP MSP Fergus Ewing, and Salmond's niece Christina Hendry, who is the daughter of Salmond's sister Gail Hendry.

The family have confirmed that there will be a limited media presence located at a respectful distance from Strichen Parish Church to observe the arrival of the hearse.

There will be no live feed or recording of the funeral service or any part of it, as well as no media access to the funeral service or the private burial.

STV are understood to be providing a live broadcast feed of the hearse arriving and leaving.

The service will be followed by a private burial at Strichen cemetery where Salmond will be laid to rest.

The family have respectfully asked that media don't take pictures of the private burial.

According to reports, close associates hope that a bigger and more public memorial could be organised around St Andrew’s Day or another of the winter holidays in Scotland.
