Plans have been submitted for the proposed new £10m Hirwaun Primary School.
Rhondda Cynon Taf council has applied for planning permission for the new building which is part of the 21st Century Schools programme.
In April RCT’s cabinet approved the construction of a new building for Hirwaun Primary School to increase the number of school places in the village. If given planning approval the new building should be up and running by September 2021 to replace the current buildings.
The current primary school, just off Longfield Court, is formed of Hirwaun County Junior School and Hirwaun County Infant and Nursery School They serve pre-school and junior pupils separately on a shared site.
The plan is for a new combined junior and infant school facility for 450 pupils, including 60 pre-school pupils and 390 primary school pupils, as well as a Flying Start facility.
A consultation has already taken place with parents, pupils, staff and governors but a further one will be carried out as part of the planning process.
The design is based on the Tonyrefail and Cwmaman primary school projects.
Here are some of the the features which will be inside the new building:
- A Flying Start facility with access by public through the day
- A nursery classroom
- A reception classroom
- Four infant classrooms
- Eight junior classrooms
- A resource and community room
- A main hall with potential access to the public
- Staff and ancillary space
The outdoor areas of the new school will include:
- A multi-use games area with potential access to the public
- A multi-use games area (pupils only)
- Hard play areas
- A grass pitch
- An habitat area
- An ecological area
The plans are for the new school to have 38 car parking spaces and 35 cycle stands and the design and access statement says the new building will be kept at one storey to avoid any negative impact on neighbours.
