Dessers backed for Rangers success as league 'not as strong'

Nigeria hero Garba Lawal has backed new Rangers signing Cyriel Dessers to score for fun in Scotland because he reckons the league is not as tough as Serie A.

Dessers secured a £4 million move to Ibrox last week and the Nigerian international became the sixth arrival at Ibrox with Michael Beale also signing Sam Lammers, Jack Butland, Kieran Dowell, Dujon Sterling and Abdallah Sima.

Dessers was eligible to play for Belgium and Nigeria and chose the African nation after talks with the Super Eagles' former boss Gernot Rohr.

He's only scored once for Nigeria, but Lawal - who played for Nigeria at two World Cups and is on the Nigerian FA's technical committee - believes Dessers will thrive in Scottish football.

The former Roda, Levski Sofia and Elfsborg striker: "It is a good move for Dessers as far as I am concerned because he’s coming to a league that is not as strong as Serie A in Italy.

"This will definitely give him the chance to prove his goalscoring prowess again.

"Dessers is a quality striker that knows how to bang in the goals and I think this is a great opportunity for him to prove his worth with Rangers.

"I am definitely expecting goals from him next season when the new season kicks off in Scotland.”
